Have the best of both worlds.
A planet passes through the solar system (propelled by a star that exploded) and not only does it's gravity tear on the world but it also quickly slows and eventually stops the earth rotating.
For the record, we aren't held onto the Earth by the Suns gravity as someone said. We're held on my Earths gravity and the Suns gravity stops us spinning off into space.

But we can conclude that if earth did stop rotating (I like the idea above) then everthing would fly around.
Oh, and hows this for a name?
"Static Fear"
For the guy that said about some guys going to space and coming back and its all different...nice idea but, not in the realms i'm thinking of. I'm just going to have a bunch of under-graduate guys and gals that figure out whats going to happen and confirm it with an astronomer and then have to warn everyone. Deep Impact style, not everyone listens and stay in the cities and therefore everyone goes flying.
However, as the speed reduction only lasts a few minutes, being in the air is a solution. Well, wouldn't it be?
After it all stops, one side of the earth is cold and in darkness, the other side is in the sun and warm. This would also be correct yes?
It's still a devloping idea. Still looking for a team and ideas. Keep posting, its cool to finally see one of my posts get more than 2 replies http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/wink.gif

if the world stopped, one half would burn with the suns rays and the other side of the earth in darkness would freeze.

So you're saying there would be no atmosphere? No clouds or anything would exist anymore? :/
I guess this means very few people would survive, but, what about the sunset/sunrise lands... perhaps survivors could strive to find them as they're not to hot and not too cold.

I think you maybe referring to my comment. I was making a statement about the earth not losing it's orbit of the sun like the moon doesn't go anywhere from us in a hurry, not us being clamped to the earth, but the earth clamped to the sun.
Jus' thought I'd clear that up so no one thinks I'm on smack!

If gravity stopped, a great deal of our atmosphere would be our atmosshpere anymore. the stuff thats left in the atmospshere is their because gravity stops it escaping.
i read this in one of those 'how to write scifi books to do with worlds'

LoL sounds like an interesting read, hehe. Oh well, i'm going to get underway with a script now methinks.
It'll be all wrong and stuff, but no-one ever said Jurassic Park was realistic, etc.

But surely, looking at other posts in this thread, it wouldn't fly off into space? A building would just smash up and crumble horizontally (this is *sooo* hard to explain) and crumble over the floor.
Hmmmm, example. Imagine an egg and spoon race, and u stop suddenly. The egg keeps going but falls to the ground.
Kind of like that, i think.

It's gonna be one of those things that people will leave the film discussing with their friends (which is a very good thing). If it's all done well enough and explained, even incorrectly using our theories, then the audience will buy into it. Just like the science in Jurassic Park.
Some more thoughts... The Earth say spins left, so when it slows down all the buildings would fall left (like when you break hard in a car). But, whatever huge force pulls the Earth right to stop it spinning would also pull the buildings right. I think they would effectively 'burst'.
Just another point I thought you might be able to incorporate. The same side of the moon always faces Earth because it travels and rotates the same speed as the Earth rotates. So if something changed the Earths (and moons) orbit we could see the other side. Just a thought.

If the earth stopped revolving, it would do everyone's heads in!
The seas would flood the land on the moon side (moons gravity)
The sun side would bake, the dark side would freeze.
If it was sudden, everything would be flung into space, as escape velocity is far less than 17,000 mph(or whatever the spin speed of earth is). Take a car crash. The speed of a crash test dummy through the windscreen is almost that of the car before it hits the wall. Now imagine a house suddenly having 17kmph of force exerted on it - it'd go flying!
cheers
